“Small things done perfectly make you big”

Reflecting on ‘Greatness’, my swimming coach Jeremy comes to my mind as inspirational. He may not turn me out into an ‘all time great’ at swimming, but the commitment he shows to every lesson is exemplary. And it is not just my swimming lesson he pays attention to. As far as I can see, he is more than 100% in every class whether with clue-less toddlers, noisy kids, opinionated young adults or ungainly adults. His attention never wavers, he is funny, yet firm and keeps at it session after session. Every class is a group of 4-5 and even when on occasions where there is only one student, he is never dis-spirited, ever-enthusiastic, travelling across the island for the 1 person out of 4 who turns up for a class.

I am reminded of what Sri Sri Ravi Shankar says “Small things done perfectly make you a big man/woman. So don’t just dream of doing big things, start doing small things with utmost care”

My swimming coach inspires me likewise to be present with all my heart and soul in every workshop I conduct. I am committed to teach as many Happiness Workshops  as I can (no matter how many participants in each workshop) because every time I put myself through the process, I encounter a batch of fresh participants who are looking to get a better vision of who they are. The experience never dulls and each workshop feels as new as the first. The knowledge or wisdom on the program never fades. Exploring the self is indeed refreshing. A Happiness Workshop is also a beautiful confluence of people, place and time – the ‘ripened’ folks coming together at the right place at the right time to recognise the wisdom in the knowledge.

This morning I almost did not make my regular Sunday morning run even after I managed to push myself out of bed and into the street. In the end I forced my myself to keep going all the way and up the hill. I didn’t regret it. Staying true to to the smallest of commitments truly lifts the spirit!
